Bills Beat Rams 37–34 in Overtime, but Aaron Donald’s Return Falls Short of Expectations

The Buffalo Bills defeated the Los Angeles Rams 37–34 in an overtime thriller on Monday night, October 12, at SoFi Stadium. While Buffalo escaped with a dramatic road victory, the result was not the homecoming Aaron Donald likely envisioned.
Donald returned to the lineup after missing two games with a back injury. The veteran defensive star made his presence felt, including recovering a crucial fumble in overtime, but the Rams ultimately failed to finish the game.
For Los Angeles, the loss was a frustrating end to a contest that featured several momentum swings, big offensive performances, and a late comeback that forced overtime.
A Wild Finish at SoFi Stadium
The Rams appeared to have another opportunity to secure a statement victory after Kyren Williams scored a one-yard touchdown with five seconds remaining in regulation, tying the game at 34–34. Williams’ score came after Buffalo running back James Cook had given the Bills a seven-point advantage with a touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
Los Angeles won the overtime coin toss and elected to kick off. Buffalo initially moved into Rams territory, but Cook fumbled, and Donald recovered the ball at the Los Angeles 20-yard line. The turnover gave the Rams a chance to capitalize and end the game.
Matthew Stafford led Los Angeles downfield, setting up Harrison Mevis for a potential game-winning 48-yard field goal. However, Buffalo defensive end Greg Rousseau blocked the attempt, giving the Bills another opportunity.
Buffalo took advantage. After regaining possession, the Bills moved into scoring range, and Tyler Bass connected on a 45-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining in overtime to secure the 37–34 victory.
Aaron Donald Makes His Return
Donald’s return was one of the major storylines entering the game. The defensive standout had been sidelined for two contests with a back injury, and his availability offered the Rams a boost against a dangerous Buffalo offense.
Donald recorded a first-quarter sack, although the play was negated by an illegal-contact penalty. His overtime fumble recovery was another pivotal moment, temporarily putting Los Angeles in position to win.
Despite those contributions, the Rams could not convert the opportunity into a victory.
Donald returned to the field and made important plays, but the final result left Los Angeles with another difficult loss.
For a player of Donald’s caliber, the expectation is always to help deliver wins. Recovering a critical fumble in overtime should have been a defining moment in his return. Instead, the Rams’ missed field goal and Buffalo’s response overshadowed the play.
Josh Allen Leads Buffalo’s Comeback
Bills quarterback Josh Allen delivered a strong performance, finishing with 331 total yards. He threw for 210 yards and a touchdown while adding 121 rushing yards and another score on the ground.
The victory also marked Allen’s first career overtime win, adding another milestone to an already eventful night.
Cook contributed 111 rushing yards and two touchdowns, although his two fumbles nearly proved costly. Buffalo’s ability to recover from the overtime turnover ultimately made the difference.
The Bills improved to 4–1 with the win, strengthening their position early in the season.
Stafford and Nacua Keep the Rams in It
Stafford put together an impressive passing performance, completing 40 of 54 attempts for 383 yards and three touchdowns. Puka Nacua recorded a career-high 17 receptions for 138 yards and a touchdown, consistently giving the Rams a reliable target.
Davante Adams added two touchdown receptions, while Williams and Blake Corum contributed on the ground.
Despite the offensive production, Los Angeles could not close out the game. The blocked field goal in overtime proved decisive, turning a potential Rams victory into an opportunity for Buffalo to escape with the win.
The game also featured a combined 24 penalties between the teams, adding another layer of difficulty to an already chaotic contest.
The Verdict: Not the Return Aaron Donald Wanted
Donald’s return featured flashes of the impact that made him one of football’s most dominant defensive players. He recorded a sack that was later negated by a penalty and recovered a fumble that gave Los Angeles a chance to win in overtime.
But football is ultimately measured by results, and the Rams left the field with a 37–34 defeat.
The loss was not solely Donald’s responsibility. Los Angeles produced enough offense to compete, and the defense created a critical turnover. However, the missed opportunity in overtime will be difficult to ignore.
For Donald, the night offered a reminder that even a productive individual performance can be overshadowed when the team cannot finish. The Rams had a chance to turn his return into a memorable victory, but Buffalo delivered the final blow.
This probably was not the return Aaron Donald had hoped for.
